"We Will One Day Dance Again"

I turned and stepped

In the music’s sway,

Face to face and holding hands

With a young man at my university.

You’re a good follower,

My ballroom dance partner told me.

You have no idea,

I replied.

Many years have drifted past

Since I last danced

With a partner,

And now—there is no safe dancing.

I cannot drift and mingle

As the music plays.

I must protect my loved ones

By keeping my distance.

I feel as though this

Is the “new normal”,

And I suppose in a way it is.

But this season is not forever.

As the preacher said,

So let this season continue.

Let the mourning and the restraint

Carry the day,

For they shall not have the final word.

We will one day dance again,

Face to face and holding hands.

We will not need fear one other’s breath

As we turn and step in the music’s sway.
